Travel & Vet Visits
This is the scenario with the strongest research behind it. A 2022 randomised, placebo-controlled study of 150 cats found that a synthetic F3 pheromone product significantly reduced three specific stress behaviors during short-distance transport — curling into a hunched position, going motionless, and meowing — compared to placebo (Shu & Gu, 2022). The effect wasn't uniform, either: it was strongest in cats with the highest baseline stress scores, meaning the cats who struggled with transport the most were also the ones who benefited the most.
Vet visits show a similar pattern from the owner's side. In an 87-cat randomised trial, owners were far more likely to describe their cat as "easier to handle / more relaxed" when F3 pheromone was present in the exam room — 41% of owners in the pheromone group said so, versus just 3% in the placebo group, a statistically significant difference (Pereira et al., 2016). Worth noting: both of these findings are about the F3 pheromone fraction in general, not a test of any single branded product. It's the mechanism being validated here, not one manufacturer's formulation.
Grooming
Grooming sits right in the middle of one of the best-documented stress categories in feline research: handling and physical restraint. Being lifted, held still, brushed against the grain, or having paws and ears touched are consistently identified as stress triggers for cats (Amat et al., 2016) — which is exactly why groomers and owners reach for a pheromone product before a session. Applying it ahead of time gives the cat a "safe and familiar" signal going into an experience that's fundamentally about touch and restraint, the same logic that supports its use for vet exams and travel. Dedicated grooming-session trials haven't been published yet, but the mechanism it works through — easing stress around handling — is precisely the one grooming calls for.
Moving Day
Moving day is the cleanest fit for a single-use product, and the reasoning comes from what actually drives feline stress. Research on stress in owned cats identifies routine disruption and unpredictability as primary drivers — the sudden loss of a predictable routine matters more than the new environment itself (Amat et al., 2016). A moving day is about as concentrated a version of that as exists: the furniture disappears, strangers come in and out, the smells change by the hour, and the whole thing is over in a single day. That single-event, time-limited nature is exactly what a short-duration product is built for.
Relocation & Settling In
Settling into a new home is a different problem than moving day itself. There's no single acute event here — it's an adjustment period that can stretch over weeks. A single 8-hour product isn't designed to cover that entire window; it's more useful to think of it as support at specific checkpoints rather than continuous coverage: arrival day, the first vet visit in the new area, and the first time the cat is left alone in the new space.
For everything in between, non-product environmental changes do more of the work. A widely used framework for setting up an indoor cat's environment recommends establishing safe zones the cat can retreat to, and placing familiar-smelling objects — bedding, toys — throughout the new space rather than leaving them boxed up (Herron & Buffington, 2010). The same framework calls for at least one litter box per cat, placed in separate locations; many behaviorists extend that further to one extra box beyond the cat count, so there's always an uncontested option. None of this is about pheromone efficacy — it's basic environmental setup that makes the space easier to settle into, and it's worth doing regardless of what product you use.

Format Guide: Sticker vs. Collar
Different pheromone formats work on different mechanisms, and picking the wrong one for your situation is the most common reason people feel like "it didn't work."
Plug-in diffusers cover roughly 700 square feet (about 65 m²), but only by running continuously off power for weeks. This is a room-saturation mechanism, a completely different approach from anything portable.
Sprays work through direct surface contact. They're only effective where they're actually applied, which makes them precise but also limited — spray a carrier interior and you've covered the carrier, nothing more.
Wearable formats (collars, and patches that clip onto a collar) don't try to cover a space at all. They travel with the cat, delivering a personal, mobile signal instead of a room-wide one.
In practice, that difference in mechanism is the whole buying decision. Sticker mode makes sense for a small, enclosed space the cat will be in for a while — a carrier interior, a bed corner, a crate. Collar mode makes sense when the cat itself will be moving around, during a grooming session or on moving day when the cat might end up anywhere in a chaotic house. The question to ask is simple: does the space need covering, or does the cat?
How to Choose a Reliable Product
Once you know which format you need, here's what actually separates a well-made product from a vague one:

The label states an exact F3 concentration or percentage. "Natural extract" with no number attached is a red flag — a real formulation discloses what's actually in it.

Onset time and duration are explicitly stated. If a product can't tell you how long it lasts, that's usually because no one measured it.

Look for single-pheromone (F3) formulas with a disclosed ratio, and be skeptical of undisclosed "multi-blend" claims — more ingredients isn't automatically better, and an undisclosed blend can't be evaluated at all.

Be skeptical of any patch or wearable claiming to cover "the whole room." That's not how localized delivery works mechanically — a claim like that usually signals marketing copy that's outrun the product's actual mechanism.
